Kaufungen - explore culture and nature in the Lossetal

Picturesque half-timbered buildings in the old town centers of Nieder- and Oberkaufungen characterize the
established village structures. Everything has been restored, lovingly cared for and the distinctive, rural character
has been preserved in both historic village centers to this day. Kaufungen was first mentioned in documents in 1011: as a royal court under the name “Coufunga”.
Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde founded a Benedictine monastery here in 1017.
Kunigunde joined the monastery's nunnery after her husband's death and lived here until her death in 1033.
Of the old monastery complex, the former dormitory, St. George's Chapel and the monastery church of the Holy
Cross - today's collegiate church - are still preserved. A tour through the monastery area and along the
Kaufungen Culture & Garden Path as well as a visit to the Alte Schule regional museum give an idea of the
historical significance of Kaufungen. On thirteen themed boards around the monastery area, numerous
illustrations and short texts provide interesting information about history and everyday rural life in
Kaufungen and the surrounding area. Below the historic monastery area, well-kept half-timbered houses are lined up close together in the old town
center of Oberkaufungen. Outstanding buildings have small information boards. The municipality of Kaufungen
offers themed tours as well as public tours. For hiking enthusiasts and cyclists, the well-developed, signposted path system in and around Kaufungen is
the ideal start for excursions. Whether it's the Märchenlandweg, GrimmSteig, Kassel-Steig, Herkules-Wartburg
cycle path, Lossetal cycle path, long-distance hiking trails, circular trails, premium hiking trails in the
“Frau Holle Land” geo-nature park – there is something for everyone. Kaufungen is also very attractive for
visitors thanks to the TRAM connection between the Lossetal and the documenta city of Kassel. Kassel, with
its diverse museum landscape and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, is easily and
quickly accessible.
