Dieburg owes its existence to the Romans

Around 125 AD, Dieburg became the capital of the Civitas Auderiensium. The small Roman metropolis, whose name
is still hidden behind the mysterious letters MED, developed splendidly. With its first documented mention in 1207,
the medieval “Dipurg” once again entered the historical stage. In 1310 Dieburg became the complete property of
Electoral Mainz. The faith that made Dieburg a small island of Catholic faith still shapes the city today.
This is evidenced by the pilgrimage to the Mother of God, which attracts thousands of believers to Dieburg every
year, and the distinctive Dieburg carnival with over 500 years of tradition. Three castles, the baroque castle garden
and the elaborately designed middle-class half-timbered houses testify to the city's prosperity. With its 15,000
inhabitants, Dieburg is now a modern, lively city.
