Marbach am Neckar - the birthplace of the great poet Friedrich Schiller

Discovering Marbach means encounters with one of the oldest country towns in Württemberg and the city of
literature, characterized by the Schiller National Museum, the German Literary Archive and the Modern
Literature Museum, which opened in 2006. Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller was born on November 10, 1759
in a modest-looking house on Niklastorstrasse. The Marbacher Schillerverein has been running a museum there
since 1859. The old town, which is worth seeing and is characterized by a high density of historical buildings, has been a
listed building since 1983. The former district of winegrowers and farmers – the Holdergassen – is particularly
attractive. These are divided into Upper, Middle and Lower Holdergasse. In the picturesque streets you will
notice the smaller houses on one side of the street, opposite which are large barns. In good years, large
quantities of grain and wine were stored here. One of the largest and most beautiful half-timbered buildings is the
former salt barn, in which the valuable and monopolistically traded salt was stored.
