Königslutter

.

The town of Königslutter developed from the village of Lutter, which was first attested in 1150 but is certainly
much older. Around 1200, the Duke of Braunschweig built a moated castle immediately east of the town, under
whose protection Königslutter developed into a market town, which was granted town charter around 1400. The city's flourishing was primarily due to the brewing activity in Königslutter. 73 breweries were authorized to
brew Duckstein beer, a tasty wheat beer that was even exported to the Netherlands. The best Duckstein beer went
to the Fürstenhöfe. Duckstein beer was highly valued at the court of Friedrich Wilhelm I. Until 1924, there were the independent villages of Oberlutter and Stiftlutter next to Königslutter, which were
incorporated into the city in the same year. Königslutter experienced another significant expansion in 1974, when
17 districts were incorporated, so that the population rose to over 16,000.
