Altensteig - lovely cultural and rafting town

Our visitors can see the charm of Altensteig literally “at a glance” from the opposite side of the Nagold.
The view of the medieval cityscape was once even used by Lufthansa in its foreign advertising.
Built as a protective castle in the 13th century, the Old Castle towers like a crown over the half-timbered houses
of Altensteiger's old town. The completely preserved complex is now home to an impressive local history and
history museum, where special exhibitions regularly take place. On the five floors of the residential tower and in
the two defensive towers “Heaven” and “Hell”, history is vividly presented through a variety of exhibits.
With its Alemannic and Franconian half-timbering, the house itself is the most valuable exhibit.
There is a good reason why Altensteig has been a member town of the “German Half-timbered Road” themed
route since 2002. Nestled in the wild, romantic landscape, the city is idyllic and yet lively with a pleasant tangle of roofs and
winding corners - a place straight out of a picture book. The historic mile leads along 22 stations from the
Nagold to the castle and allows visitors to experience history up close. The lovingly restored “Bäck-Schwarz”
house has half a millennium under its belt.
