Town hall Michelstadt (c) Kulturamt Michelstadt.

The late Gothic town hall is certainly the most original half-timbered building in Germany and was built in 1484.
This year is engraved in ancient Arabic numerals on the support posts on the north side and the front.
The architect of the magnificent building is unknown. The actual building rests on massive, heavy oak posts.
The beautiful west front with the chamfered gable and the bay window turrets create a unique picture of medieval
character. The court sessions took place in the lower hall, which was originally completely open.
The old custom of holding such meetings outdoors under a court tree was retained through the open hall.
When the weather was bad, a market was also held here. The old city scales still hang in the hall.
You can also marvel at a cloth press with a thick spindle from the 16th century. An iron ell is embedded in a
mighty oak post on the north side. The scales in use used to be calibrated here and anyone could measure the
cloth purchased on the market.
