Osterwieck

.

Osterwieck used to be called “Seligenstadt”. The first church was founded in 780 by Charlemagne.
Today Osterwieck has three churches. The two Protestant churches of St. Stephani and St. Nicholas Church, as well
as the Catholic St. Josef Church. The St. Stephani Church is part of the “Romanesque Road” and was built in the
12th century. The town of Osterwieck is also often referred to as the “Pearl of Saxony-Anhalt”. The reason for this
is the over 400 houses in different half-timbered styles. The oldest house on Kapellenstrasse was built in 1450 - 94
houses date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Here you can find everything from the Gothic to the Renaissance,
the Baroque, Classicism to the Lower Saxon half-timbered style. Some of these showpieces are the local history
museum, the Bunte Hof, the Till Eulenspiegel House and the Schäfershof, with a characteristic pigeon tower and a
large farm and sculpture garden. In 1991, the renovation of the old town began through the urban monument
protection funding program; Many of the houses, streets and squares in need of renovation have already been
renovated and shine with a fresh shine. The nearby Harz and many tourist destinations in the region, the Großer and Kleiner Fallstein recreation area right
on the outskirts of the city with interesting hiking, cycling and excursion destinations and the outdoor swimming
pool make a stay in the city an experience.
