Ideal für die Fahrten mit dem Rad auf der Deutschen Fachwerkstraße ist das Tourenrad. In das Streckennetz sind die
Radfernwege der D-Netz Routen (Radnetz Deutschland), die landesweiten Radfernwege und gut ausgeschilderte und befahrbare regionale Radwege einbezogen. Es sind nicht immer nur asphaltierte Wege, sondern auch Wege mit wassergebundener Oberfläche. Manchmal ist auch ein kurzer Abschnitt eines Waldweges im Streckennetz.
Die Streckenabschnitte führen entlang von Flüssen, durch Wiesen und Wälder und auch Steigungen sind zu überwinden. Die Strecken sind mit lokalen, regionalen oder überregionalen Wegweisern ausgewiesen.
