Pearl of the Swabian Alb

Surrounded by forested mountain ranges and rugged cliffs, the blue pot town of Blaubeuren is picturesquely
nestled in the valley of the ancient Danube. Because of this special location, but above all because of its
architectural, cultural, scenic and geological treasures, the city is often called “the pearl of the Swabian Alb”. Blaubeuren, first mentioned as a city in 1267, has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Germany and
developed exclusively within the fortified city walls until 1800. The cityscape is characterized by stately
half-timbered houses, enchanted alleys, cozy cafés and inns as well as the church and market square. Blaubeuren is famous for the Blautopf, the legendary karst spring. The water from the subterranean cave system
of the Swabian Alb collects in the 21 meter deep spring pot, which glows unspeakably blue, especially after long
periods of rain. The source was the inspiration for Eduard Mörike's fairy tale novel about the fate of the
“Schöne Lau”.
